How to Run Discord as Admin — Make Someone an Admin

Discord shouldn’t need administrator privileges because it plays nicely with Windows 10 security controls. That said, if you guys want to run Discord as an administrator, you can do that. You can also run any program along with admin privileges on any Windows computer that you guys have sufficient permissions in order to control. Windows also has a couple of levels of access, user and admin as well. The user can also perform basic tasks on the computer, however, not make any system changes. Anything that changes the way Windows works, interacts along with hardware or other software. Anything that modifies or could impact security or stability is locked away behind admin privileges as well.

Windows security

If the computer that you are using it yours, chances are you guys have admin access to it. Even if you do, Windows 10 still tries to do what it can to protect and secure itself through locking you out of some functions. That is designed in order to help maintain stability, however, can get in the way at times.

This system is referred to as the ‘least privilege’ system that provides Windows accounts the minimum privileges important to perform a task. This is designed to stop malware or also user error from harming system integrity. That allows you in order to perform the task that you are there to do.

UAC, User Access Control, and the lesser-known Mandatory Integrity Control (MIC) both seek in order to control what applications can access things such as registry, Group Policy, and core processes of Windows to try to keep it secure as well. They limit what programs can actually do, where they can also write changes to, how many, and what type of registry changes they can perform as well. What resources they can access and all manner of other interaction as well. These security functions are why you may most of the time have to run an application as an administrator.

Run Discord along with admin access in Windows 10

As far as I know, there are also no functions that Discord needs to perform that need the program to make core changes to Windows. It should also run perfectly fine without admin access, however, if you come up against something. That needs admin access, you can provide it in a number of ways.

You guys will need to have administrator access to your computer in order to make these changes.

Right-click the Discord shortcut and then choose Run as administrator.

That is probably the easiest way to do it as well. It is situational, so that if you guys are running an advanced process of some kind. That you can open it as an administrator and many other times just run normally.

You can temporarily open Discord as an administrator along with a keyboard shortcut too.

That is located in the Discord app in the Windows Start Menu.
Tap on Ctrl + Shift and choose the Discord icon.

This also opens Discord as an admin and works situationally actually. So you would have to do that each and every time you opened Discord.

Right-tap on the Discord shortcut and select Properties.
Then choose the Compatibility tab and check the box next in order to Run this program as an administrator.
Tap on Apply.

This will basically set the admin privilege permanently.

You guys can also set Discord in order to run along with admin privileges in the registry

First, type ‘Regedit in the Windows search box and just open the Registry Editor.
Navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers’
Then select the Layers folder in the left menu and right-tap on an empty space in the right pane.
Choose to Create New String Value.
You have to enter the full path to Discord.
Now enter ‘~ RUNASADMIN’ as the value data and then choose OK.

For me, the full path to Discord is actually ‘C:\Users\jamie\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Discord Inc. You guys can find out via finding Discord in the Start Menu, choose More and Open File Location. Then tap on the URL bar at the top in order to give you the full path.

Turn off User Account Control

If it’s just you who uses the computer, then you can always disable UAC if it gets in the way too much. As long as you guys have a good antivirus, malware scanner, and have good internet hygiene. You should be fine turning it off as well. If you share your computer or also have a habit of going to the murkier areas of the internet and downloading random files, then perhaps you shouldn’t turn it off.

In order to turn off UAC, do this:

First, just type UAC into the Windows search box.
Then choose Change User Account Control Settings from the menu.
Now set the slider to the bottom next to Never Notify.
Select OK in order to save.

This basically turns off UAC. It won’t run Discord as an admin, however, should cure those annoying UAC popups you have to agree whenever you guys make a system change as well.

How can you guys make someone an admin on Discord

First, just open Discord on your Mac or PC and navigate to the server you own that you guys want to make someone an administrator in.
Then tap on the server’s name at the top left of the screen and choose “Server Settings” from the menu that appears.
Then choose “Roles” from the list of options on the left.
At the top-left, tap on the tiny plus icon next to “Roles” in order to create a new role. The new role will be called, fittingly, “New Role” as well.
Now under the “Role Name” heading, you guys can rename this role. Rename it “Admin,”. Or some other title that will let people know what it’s actually for. Roles will be visible to other users via tapping on the name of the person with the role, so just pick a good title.
You guys may want to check off the “Display role members separately from online members” option. This will make it so users along with this role are displayed above all other users in the user’s list.
Now under “General Permissions,” just check the “Administrator” option. Then tap on “Save changes” at the very bottom.
In order to give this newly created role to a user, right-click their username in your server and choose “Roles” from the drop-down menu. Then check off the box next to your new role as well.
